Cine Las Americas presents a selection of fifteen narrative and documentary features by the finest emerging and established filmmakers to audiences in Central Texas. This year’s selections represent fifteen countries’ participation in production and co-production of the films, and highlight a diversity of themes, genres, and styles characteristic of contemporary national and international cinema trends.

Hecho en Tejas

Cine Las Americas presents “Hecho en Tejas,” a series of films and videos shot and/or produced in Texas, to showcase the wide variety of work being produced in the state by filmmakers with varied backgrounds. One feature film and seven short films are scheduled during this year’s festival. For a ninth consecutive year, Cine Las Americas is pleased to count on a partnership with the Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI) to present a jury award to the best “Hecho en Tejas” film.

Ambulante Showcase

Cine Las Americas presents a special showcase in partnership with Ambulante, a non-profit organization that focuses on promoting documentary film as a tool for social and cultural transformation. Each of the documentary films in this series tackles issues that resonate not only in Mexico, but also internationally. The films selected reflect both organizations’ missions, in particular, support of documentary filmmaking as a means to promote discourse around important contemporary issues.

Femme Frontera Showcase

In collaboration with Femme Frontera, Cine Las Americas presents the 2017 Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase. The selection includes women filmmakers from all over the world who challenge stereotypes and false perspectives about women, gender roles, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community. The Femme Frontera showcase compliments Cine Las Americas’ mission of promoting cross-cultural understanding by expanding the regions of the world that are represented in this year’s programs.

Emergencia Youth Film Festival

Cine Las Americas presents the 2018 Emergencia Youth Film Festival. As a celebration of filmmakers on the rise, the Emergencia Youth Film Competition represents a special section of the festival showcasing works by filmmakers 19 years or younger. This year’s program includes special presentations by members of this year’s Youth Jury Members (youth from Latinitas and PHS Productions) and a retrospective film by the Creative Action Youth Cinema Collective. We are also pleased to present the winning PSAs from this year’s YouthCam Contest. The Emergencia Youth Competition lineup represents a selection of eighteen titles from the USA and abroad. The films in competition are eligible for an audience award for Best Emergencia Youth Film.

In collaboration with Latinitas, Cine Las Americas presents “Latinx Culture in East Austin,” a VR documentary. Students and mentors of Latinitas explore Latinx culture in East Austin by documenting longtime East Austin establishments and interviewing locals.
