Cine Las Americas presents a selection of eighteen narrative and eight documentary features by the finest emerging and established filmmakers to audiences in Central Texas. This year’s selections represent eighteen countries’ participation in production and co-production of the films, and highlight a diversity of themes, genres, and styles characteristic of contemporary national and international cinema trends.

Cine Las Americas presents a selection of five films from emerging and promising talent, including selections from all over the Americas in a variety of genres and forms. All films in this category represent first or second narrative features by the directors. Hecho en Tejas

Cine Las Americas presents “Hecho en Tejas,” a series of films and videos shot and/or produced in Texas, to showcase the wide variety of work being produced in the state by filmmakers with varied backgrounds. One feature film and seven short films are scheduled during this year’s festival. The films are eligible for an Audience Award. For the tenth consecutive year, Cine Las Americas is pleased to partner with the Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI) to present a Jury Award to the Best “Hecho en Tejas” film.

The films may be short in length but not in scope. From the deeply personal to the broadly universal, each film tackles subjects and tells stories that will resonate with viewers long after their runtime ends. These films will open for features during the festival, and are eligible for a Jury Award for Best Narrative Short.

Lourdes Portillo Retrospective

In collaboration with Violet Crowne Cinemas, Cine Las Americas presents a retrospective of work by acclaimed filmmaker and activist Lourdes Portillo. The selection includes three works by Lourdes, each with its own style and concern, commemorative of significant moments in American history. While these films all reference tragedies, they each also speak to the strengths inherent in human nature to ultimately survive, thrive, and celebrate life.

Ambulante Showcase

Cine Las Americas presents a special showcase in partnership with Ambulante, a non-profit organization that focuses on promoting documentary film as a tool for social and cultural transformation. The documentary films in this series tackle issues that resonate not only in Mexico, but also internationally. The films selected reflect both organizations’ missions, in particular, support of documentary filmmaking as a means to promote discourse around important contemporary issues.

Femme Frontera

Cine Las Americas presents a diverse array of important films, which we consider essential to share with Central Texas audiences. This year’s Panorama short film selection includes twelve titles including narrative, documentary, experimental, animated, comedy, and drama. In collaboration with Originator Studios, for the third year in a row, Cine Las Americas presents a vr360 / 360º video selection. This year we are pleased to present two works in different genres: the documentary “Lionhearted” by German-Bolivian director Ricarda Saleh, and the music video “Tragicomedia” by CLAIFF alum Vadim Lasca from Venezuela.

CineClub México

CineClub México was founded in September of 2018 by a collective of partnering organizations and individuals interested in promoting Mexican film in Austin, Texas, through monthly screenings. Each screening is accompanied by an invited guest who holds a Q&A with attendees after the film. As a founding member of CineClub México, Cine Las Americas is proud to include in the festival lineup a copresentation of a documentary by the acclaimed filmmaker Everardo González.

Emergencia Youth Film Festival

Cine Las Americas presents the 2019 Emergencia Youth Film Festival Screening and Showcase. As a celebration of filmmakers on the rise, the Emergencia Youth Film Festival represents a special section of the festival showcasing works by filmmakers 19 years of age or younger. This year’s program includes special presentations by members of this year’s Youth Jury from Latinitas and E4 Youth. The Emergencia Youth Film Festival competition lineup represents a selection of seventeen titles from the USA and abroad. The films in competition are eligible for an audience award for “Best Emergencia Youth Film.”
