In the midst of a mysterious epidemic, Eusebio (Victor Prada), a depressed and isolated man, cleans up the detritus left behind by the dying. He finds a boy, Joaquin (Adrian Du Bois), hiding out in an apartment, and brings him home until he can find his aunt. Eusebio makes eyeholes in a cardboard box, and convinces a frightened Joaquin that if he wears it, it will protect him. A tentative trust and caring gradually builds between the two; Eusebio is quietly transformed as the epidemic rages on. The film shows restraint in letting the relationship unfold between two guarded souls, incorporating dry comedic touches and artfully composed long takes. EL LIMPIADOR enjoyed a world premiere at the San Sebastián International Film Festival where it won the Jury’s Special Mention, and was Peru’s official entry to the Academy Awards for 2014.
