Cine Las Americas presents a special showcase in partnership with Ambulante, a non-profit organization that focuses on promoting documentary film as a tool for social and cultural transformation. Each of the three documentary films in this series tackles issues that resonate not only in Mexico but across the border shared between Mexico and the United States. The films selected reflect both organizations’ missions, in particular, support of documentary filmmaking as a means to promote discourse around important contemporary issues.
AMBULANTE is a non-profit organization that focuses on promoting documentary film as a tool for social and cultural transformation. Founded in Mexico in 2005 by Gael García Bernal, Diego Luna, Pablo Cruz and Elena Fortes, it brings documentary films and training programs to places where they are rarely available in order to create a participative and critical public, cultivate new forms of expression, and encourage debate in Mexico and abroad.
Each year, Ambulante organizes an international film festival that tours Mexico for three months with aprogram of over 100 documentaries, more than 120 guests and screenings in 150 venues. It includes film screenings, workshops, talks, seminars, networking panels, documentary theater, and a showcase of documentaries at the Ibero-American Music Festival Vive Latino and Cumbre Tajín. Ambulante opens up different ways of experiencing and understanding documentary film. It is a non-competitive film festival, and 70% of its program is free.
SPECIAL GUEST CHRISTINE DAVILA is the Director of Ambulante California. She has been a Programming Associate at the Sundance Film Festival since 2008 and is the Programmer at the Curaçao International Film Festival Rotterdam which is dedicated to promoting up and coming Caribbean filmmakers. She is also an Associate Programmer at the Los Angeles Film Festival. A champion of emerging U.S. Latino talent, Davila tracks filmmakers and the festival scene on her blog chicanafromchicago.com.
