JUANICAS is an intimate and bittersweet portrait of a Mexican immigrant family affected by mental illness. For over ten years, filmmaker Karina García Casanova has been documenting her complex relationship with her mother and brother, both of whom suffer from bipolar disorder. When her brother commits suicide, she attempts to make sense of this event and come to terms with her past.

About the director

Karina_Garcia_CasanovaKarina García Casanova is a Mexican born filmmaker based in Montreal, Canada. Her award winning short films (THE GREAT THINKERS, DISOWN DELETE) have been broadcast and shown in numerous film festivals and institutions (Clermont-Ferrand, Edinburgh International Film Festival, Sapporo Short Film Festival, Boston Museum of Fine Arts, etc). JUANICAS is her first feature documentary.
