Fernando Lugo, former Catholic Bishop and proponent of Liberation Theology, won the 2008 presidential elections in Paraguay. After 61 years of hegemony by the Colorado Party, created by dictator Alfredo Stroessner who ruled Paraguay for 35 years, this unexpected victory came as a political miracle. The people’s dream for change finally came true. In a political thriller set in stranger-than-fiction Paraguay, we follow Lugo and his team’s hopes and disappointments, until their tragic fall from power (a coup d’etat in 2012). A unique period in history is documented in an intimate, universal film, providing an insight into the sense and the limits of politics, as well as the paradoxes of democratic systems nowadays – a Shakespearian, contemporary drama about power.
