MAKE NO NOISE chronicles the long struggle of skateboarders organizing to secure a permanent skatepark in Northfield, MN. Shot in multiple formats and in collaboration with local skateboarders, the film examines Northfields’s delayed response to the needs of this group of youth, and calls into question the town’s reputation as a welcoming place in which to grow up. As young skateboarders learn to voice their needs and advocate for themselves, the film explores the meaning of belonging, our understanding of public space, and reflects on who gets to decide how this space should be used.

About the director

Cecilia Cornejo Sotelo was born and raised in San Antonio, Chile, and is a graduate of The University of Iowa and The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Her work centers on issues of displacement, marginalization, and on the experience of living in-between cultures. In 2012, she embarked on the Living Marginal project, a multi-platform work intended to function as a series of audiovisual meditations on belonging. Her work has shown nationally and internationally in the US, Germany, Spain, France, and Cuba. She currently lives and works in Northfield, MN.
