A playful yet critical exploration of a singularly Panamanian phenomenon, REINAS ushers us into the spectacular, strange and stressful world of queen ceremonies. Not the same as beauty pageants, queen ceremonies are a widespread custom and an integral part of Panamanian folklore. These queens symbolize the festive national spirit as thousands are crowned each year and many more only dream of this honor. But these ceremonies also promote a very particular, potentially troubling idea of womanhood. After premiering at the Panama International Film Festival, where it won the Grolsch Discovery Award in 2013, REINAS has continued on a successful festival run, including BACIFI and the Chicago Latino Film Festival.
