Lelia

Artist: Marcella Simien
Directors: Josh Cannon, Brody Kuhar
Folk, American Roots, Zydeco, Louisiana Creole Zydeco
(United States)

Lelia retraces and reimagines Marcella Simien’s familial Creole roots in Louisiana, channeling them as a spiritual presence that continues to guide her life and art. Through a vivid visual collage, directors Marcella Simien, Josh Cannon, and Brody Kuhar capture the rich history, people, and energy that raised her- Lelia becoming an energetic bridge between past and present.

The Louisiana Creoles, Indigenous to the region, created the cultural foundations of what we know as Louisiana today. Yet their story has often been misrepresented or overshadowed, folded into the broader “Cajun” identity- a term historically used by white communities to market the culture while erasing the Creoles’ distinct heritage and contributions. Lelia seeks to restore and celebrate that lineage.

Simien’s family has deep roots in the Mallet, Louisiana region dating back to the early 1700s. Their spirit runs through her story and her music- alive in every note, image, and breath of Lelia.

As she did with this music video by using the old 40’s black and white movie style while integrating modern Chicano culture as well as Chicana empowerment by having all the main characters depicted as strong women in positions of power. Aside from the storyline and film style, the costume design in this video consists of over 20 custom tailored zoot suits by internationally known business El Pachuco Zoot suit; established in Fullerton, California in 1978. In the end, Adelaide aims to share with the audience a piece of the joyous and colorful culture of the Pachuco and Pachuca without even needing to use color.
