This spring, Cine Las Americas‘ monthly CineNoche series at Violet Crown Cinema features documentaries spotlighting women’s activism in Latin America. MUJERES EN LA LUCHA represents 5 regions and brings to the fore conversations around land and water rights, migration, reproductive rights, state violence and more. At the center of the stories are the unwavering women fighting for their communities. Pre-recorded Q&A’s with the filmmakers will follow the screenings. View the line-up and get your tickets below. Synopsis: MAXIMA follows Peruvian indigenous farmer Máxima Acuña in her fight to protect her land as she stands up to the largest gold producer in the world: US-based Newmont Mining Corporation. Throughout Máxima’s fight for justice, the film provides an illustrative case study in the tactics used by transnational corporations to commit human rights violations and environmental crimes, the role played by non-profits and The World Bank, and, ultimately, the resilience of one woman who refuses to back down.

Synopsis: On March 2, 2016, environmental activist Berta Cáceres was gunned down by hired hitmen. She had led the Lenca people in their efforts to stop the construction of a hydroelectric plant on the Gualcarque River. Before her assassination, Cáceres wrote down the names of the people and companies who wanted her dead. Using these clues, a local journalist and an international lawyer put the puzzle pieces together to solve her murder.

DOS RÍOS (TWO RIVERS): Betty Vásquez Rivera is a Honduran environmentalist, María Caal is a Mayan Q’eqchi’ community leader and lives in Guatemala, without knowing each other, they are united by one clarity: the defense of the rivers in her territories.

TRAS LA VIDA (TOWARDS LIFE): Ana Enamorado, a Guatemalan woman becomes an activist after her son goes missing while crossing the Mexico/US border. She moves to Mexico to track him and helps others in the same painful situation.

Joined by local nonprofit Project Schoolhouse with a short film screening of VICTORINA.

Synopsis- Meet Victorina, a 74-year-old Nicaraguan woman who never had access to clean water. Through our partnership with her community and its members, she no longer has to walk for water and can confidently drink the water in her home with just a twist of a tap.

FLY SO FAR (NUESTRA LIBERTAD)

Synopsis: FLY SO FAR follows Teodora Vásquez and The Seventeen in their struggle to regain their freedom. Due to the criminalisation of abortion, they have been sentenced up to 30 years in prison for having an obstetric emergency. Their testimonies and cases are evidence of the State’s violence against women, but also of collective resilience and solidarity.
