Synopsis

The 1931 Spanish version of DRACULA, directed by George Melford, is a notable adaptation of Bram Stoker’s classic novel. Filmed simultaneously with the more famous English version starring Bela Lugosi, this rendition offers a unique perspective and cultural interpretation.

Set in the eerie landscapes of Transylvania, the story follows the charismatic yet sinister Conde Dracula (Carlos Villarias), who sets his sights on the beautiful Eva Seward (Lupita Tovar). As he arrives in England, a series of mysterious events unfold, leading to fear and madness among the townsfolk.

Unlike its American counterpart, this version is notable for its uncensored content, exploring themes of seduction, terror, and the battle between good and evil in a more explicit manner. With its atmospheric cinematography and haunting score, the Spanish DRACULA not only showcases the talents of its cast but also captures the timeless allure of Stoker’s tale, establishing itself as a significant and provocative counterpart to the English version.
