Film Series: Beyond Macondo: Gabriel García Márquez and Contemporary Colombian Cinema

Presented by Austin Film Society, various dates, October 2015

Venue: AFS at The Marchesa | 6226 Middle Fiskeville Rd.

Colombia is the new kid on the block in Latin American cinema. As the country Beyond Macondo Thumbnaildramatically increased the scope and quality of film production in recent years, a new generation of Colombian filmmakers exploded onto the world’s stage, with a wide-ranging aesthetic and political sensibility befitting the cultural, social and geographical diversity of this vibrant and complex South American nation.  This film series coincides with a major symposium, “Gabriel García Márquez: His Life and Legacy,” to be hosted by UT Austin’s Harry Ransom Center and LLILAS Benson Latin American Studies & Collections, Oct. 28th – 30th. A literary luminary, García Márquez was also a lifelong screenwriter, movie lover, and pivotal supporter of Latin American film industries. “Beyond Macondo” pays homage to his cinematic legacy, showing how contemporary Colombian directors have echoed García Márquez’s deep sense of political justice and love of popular culture, while also expressing their own unique thematic concerns and approaches to filmmaking. Kicking off with a new documentary detailing Márquez’s life and legacy, the series continues with four contemporary narratives and includes special guest appearances by several Colombian filmmakers. – Austin Film Society, Essential Cinema
