In collaboration with Femme Frontera, Cine Las Americas presents the 2017 Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase. The selection includes women filmmakers from all over the world who challenge stereotypes and false perspectives about women, gender roles, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community. The Femme Frontera showcase compliments Cine Las Americas’ mission of promoting cross-cultural understanding by expanding the regions of the world that are represented in this year’s programs.
FEMME FRONTERA. Wanting to host a private screening for friends and family upon the completion of her short film, MEMORY BOX, Femme Frontera founder Angie Reza Tures reached out to some of her favorite filmmakers in El Paso and asked them to be a part of the screening. What transpired became an exhibition celebrating female filmmakers from the El Paso-Juarez U.S.-Mexico border region called the Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase. It premiered at the Alamo Drafthouse on August 1st, 2016 and sold out within ten days.
Now a collective, the six founding members of Femme Frontera have evolved the Showcase to include women filmmakers from all over the world who challenge stereotypes and false perspectives about women, gender roles, people of color, and the LGBTQ+ community. The 2nd Annual Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase, held on September 23rd, 2017, received over 185 submissions from around the globe and featured films which thematically push, if not altogether smash barriers in regards to gender, geographical borders, cultural identity, and oppression. Femme Frontera also continues to advocate for the amplification of women’s voices through media education workshops and community outreach.

SPECIAL GUEST IN ATTENDANCE: ANGIE REZA TURES. Femme Frontera founder and filmmaker, Angie Reza Tures has worked in independent film since 2003 after graduating from the University of San Francisco with a B.A. in Media Studies and minor in Music. For twelve years, she worked as a producer, director, and editor in the Bay Area mentoring under Oscar-nominated and Sundance award-winning documentary filmmakers. In 2011, she moved back to her hometown of El Paso, Texas to start a family and began teaching documentary filmmaking classes to youth in El Paso’s Segundo Barrio. In 2016, after the completion of her short film, MEMORY BOX, she curated and organized the Femme Frontera Filmmaker Showcase with five other female filmmakers from the U.S.-Mexico border region. Femme Frontera is now an organization of which Tures is the Executive Director.
