Cine Las Americas presents a selection of sixteen narrative and documentary features by the finest emerging and established filmmakers to audiences in Central Texas. This year’s selections represent seventeen countries’ participation in production and co-production of the films, and highlight a diversity of themes, genres and styles characteristic of contemporary national and international cinema trends.

Hecho en Tejas

Cine Las Americas presents “Hecho en Tejas,” a series of films shot and/or produced in Texas, to showcase the wide variety of work being produced in the state by filmmakers with varied backgrounds. One feature, eight short film, and two music videos are scheduled during this year’s festival. For an eighth consecutive year, Cine Las Americas is pleased to count on a partnership with the Texas Archive of the Moving Image (TAMI) to present a jury award to the best “Hecho en Tejas” film.

Ambulante Showcase

Cine Las Americas presents a special showcase in partnership with Ambulante, a non-profit organization that focuses on promoting documentary film as a tool for social and cultural transformation. Each of the documentary films in this series tackles issues that resonate not only in Mexico, but also internationally. The films selected reflect both organizations’ missions, in particular, support of documentary filmmaking as a means to promote discourse around important contemporary issues. This year’s selections also feature films from Ambulante Más Allá, one of Ambulante’s outreach programs.

Contemporary Cuban Video Showcase

Cine Las Americas presents a selection of Cuban Video Art, in partnership with Austin-based Experimental Response Cinema (ERC). The video programs follow the theme “Move Things: Videocreation in Cuba,” and are all curated and presented by respected Cuban artists, historians, and critics.

Emergencia Youth Film Festival

Cine Las Americas presents the 2017 Emergencia Youth Film Festival. As a celebration of filmmakers on the rise, the Emergencia Youth Film Competition represents a special section of the festival showcasing works by filmmakers 19 years or younger. This year’s program will open with a special presentation by members of this year’s Youth Jury Members: youth from Latinitas and PHS Productions. Following their presentation, the Emergencia Youth Jury will share the competition lineup with those in attendance. The films in competition are eligible for an audience award for Best Emergencia Youth Film.
