This film is a tale of two taco trucks weaving together the narratives of a Salvadoran family's traditional lunch truck that roams the strawberry fields on the Central Coast of California, with a modern Mexican gourmet food truck serving the high-tech companies of Silicon Valley. As we follow along with both restaurants-on-wheels on their daily routes, we see the dedication and struggle that it takes to feed a hungry workforce in these different communities. LONCHE has been delighting international audiences as part of the Official Selection in the Oaxaca, Take Two, and Food & Farm Film Festivals.

Mexico/USA, Cultural Documentary, 2013  24 min, HDV, ColorSpanish, Chinanteco with English subtitles

Director Arturo Juárez Aguilar in attendance

This is the story of stone soup, a nourishing dish that has survived in a village in the highlands of Oaxaca. Passed on through their elders, the millennial recipe is a gift from the ancestors. Men prepare the soup, which they offer in honor of the women, children, and elderly of the village. In this way, THE PATH OF STONE SOUP transmits both ideology and language from generation to generation.

Vanilla: The Sacred Orchid

Curtis Craven

Mexico/USA, Docmentary, 2010 27 min, BetaSP, Color Spanish with English subtitles

Vanilla is a New World spice originating from the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Two different groups of people are involved in its production: the indigenous people who have been growing it on small farms for centuries, and descendants of Italian immigrants who have been processing and selling the bean since the mid-1800s. Vanilla: The Sacred Orchid examines the relationship these two cultures have with the plant during its yearly cycle, from the hand-pollination of the flowers, to the harvesting and subsequent drying of the bean.

Robert Lemon

USA, Documentary, 2010 14 min, Digital, Color English, Spanish with English subtitles

Austin, TX is seeing a strong emergence of new food cultures, which in turn is shaping community identities throughout the city. By juxtaposing immigrant taco trucks on the East side of Austin to the new, trendy food trucks in the eclectic and eccentric neighborhood of South Austin, ¿Tacos or Tacos? shows that taco trucks are more than just a place to eat for Mexican immigrants.
