Nacho Vigalondo

Spain, Comedy/Drama/Sci-Fi, 201190 min, RedOne, ColorSpanish with English subtitles

Julio wakes up with one hell of a hangover. As he gradually takes in his surroundings, it's obvious he's not in his own bed. He introduces himself to Julia, his apparent hookup from the night before, and they go through the typically awkward conversation. Julia is clearly trying to get him out of her apartment as soon as possible. But as he gathers his belongings, they realize that things are much too quiet, even for a Sunday. A quick trip to the balcony reveals absolutely no one on the street. They gaze off into the distance and see a huge spaceship looming on the horizon. While they struggle to understand what they're seeing, Julia's neighbor Angel stops by. Angel brings news of the alien invasion, and it becomes apparent that he's obsessed with Julia and maybe even spying on the apartment. When Julia's live-in boyfriend Carlos comes home, things become even more complicated. (Synopsis by Luke Mullen)

José e PilarJose and Pilar

Miguel Gonçalves Mendes

Spain/Portugal, Documentary, 2010117 min, DigiBeta, ColorSpanish, Portuguese with English subtitles

José e Pilar is a deeply moving story about love, loss and literature. It follows the days of José Saramago, the Nobel-laureate Portuguese novelist, and his wife, Pilar del Río. The film shows their whirlwind life of international travel, his passion for completing his last masterpiece, The Elephant's Journey, and how their love quietly sustains them throughout. José e Pilar reveals the hidden Saramago, unravels any preconceived notions about him, and proves that genius and simplicity are indeed compatible. It is a funny and touching portrait on the endurance of the artistic spirit. A glimpse into the life of one of the greatest creators of the 20th century, it shows us that, as Saramago says, "There is always another way to say everything." This life-affirming film has charmed audiences and juries world wide, and was Portugal's official entry to the 2012 Academy Awards.

La maleta mexicanaThe Mexican Suitcase

Trisha Ziff

Mexico/Spain, Documentary, 201186 min, HDV/35mm, Color/Black & WhiteEnglish, Spanish with English subtitles

La maleta mexicana tells the story of lost negatives found at the bottom of a closet in Mexico City in 2007. The photographers were exiled from their countries, but were able to document the dangers of fascism in Spain with their cameras. The photojournalists, Robert Capa, David Seymour, and Gerda Taro met in Paris in 1936, then traveled to Spain. Throughout the film, we learn the story of the war and the exile of the photojournalists. This is a film about images taken in the past and recovered in our present. It also looks at how a new generation in Spain is beginning to reconcile itself with its own history. La maleta mexicana is about the power and fragility of memory, about the historical ties between Mexico and Spain, and about the search for the truth. Along with other renowned collaborators, John Sayles served as an advisor on this ambitious and thoughtful film, which has screened at festivals including San Sebastián and Morelia International.

Seen through the eyes of an exile, the large, Latin American city of Lima, Peru provides a sense of nostalgia and yearning for director Sergio García Locatelli. Filming the city during a grey, misty winter, the historic heart of the city, in all its reconstruction and restructuring, shows the coexistence of two worlds: that of an aristocratic past and of the current inhabitants who emigrated in search of the "Lima dream." The film takes audiences on a panoramic tour of Lima and its outskirts - a place where poverty exists visibly within the margins of wealth.

Nostalgia de la luz Nostalgia for the Light

Patricio Guzmán

Chile/France/Spain/Germany, Documentary, 2010 90 min, HDCam, Color Spanish with English subtitles

Co-sponsored by Austin Film Society

Astronomers from all over the world gather in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile to observe the stars. Here, the transparency of the sky means that you can see to the very limits of the universe. Below the desert, the dryness of the ground keeps human remains intact forever: pre-Colombian mummies, explorers, miners, and the remains of disappeared political prisoners from Pinochet's dictatorship. Women sift the desert soil for the bones of their loved ones while archaeologists uncover traces of ancient civilizations, and astronomers examine the old and distant galaxies. Melding celestial and earthly quests, Nostalgia de la luz is a gorgeous, moving, and deeply personal odyssey. Named Best Documentary at the 2010 European Film Academy Awards.
