ALMOST CRIMES is the story of two young men and the decisions they are driven to make when they try to rob a South Texas cash loans office targeted towards Latino immigrants. Sam, an outsider, has nothing to lose but the haunting desire to escape his small town solitude. Jack is the town's prodigal son and Sam's closest friend, so when Sam asks him for his help with the heist, he can't refuse. Jack has other reasons for wanting to escape but he has a lot more to lose than Sam does. Ultimately both will have to face their feelings for each other as they realize that sometimes desire stands in the way of loyalty, and that there are still many miles left between the town and the city. Because, as they know, we can only play the cards we are dealt and, when push comes to shove, we take our love wherever we can find it.

Guañape Sur

János Richter

Italy/Peru, Documentary, 201023 min, HDCAM, ColorSpanish with English subtitles

Guañape Sur is a barren rock island off the coast of Peru. No soil, no water. Nothing grows there. Around its shores, a restricted area has been established. The island serves hundreds of thousands of sea birds as a breeding ground. A war has been fought over guano. And even during peacetime, harvesting it from the sharp rock is a brutal fight. Everything on the island is done by hand. The beautiful cinematography contrasts with its subject matter, and leaves the viewer impressed by the landscape and the workers' experiences. Guañape Sur has previously screened around the world, including at the prestigious Hot Docs and IDFA.

In the urban music scene of Lima, Peru's capital city, only five percent of musicians are women. Amidst this male-dominated musical environment, a group of professional women have come together to create an all-women percussion ensemble called Parió Paula. Por fin parió Paula reveals how these women are discovering power and creativity through percussion. As they overcome their insecurities about playing music they develop a strong community of women unlike anything they have experienced before.

Sergio García Locatelli

Spain/Peru, Documentary, 2009 19 min, DVCAM, Color Spanish with English subtitles

Seen through the eyes of an exile, the large, Latin American city of Lima, Peru provides a sense of nostalgia and yearning for director Sergio García Locatelli. Filming the city during a grey, misty winter, the historic heart of the city, in all its reconstruction and restructuring, shows the coexistence of two worlds: that of an aristocratic past and of the current inhabitants who emigrated in search of the "Lima dream." The film takes audiences on a panoramic tour of Lima and its outskirts - a place where poverty exists visibly within the margins of wealth.
