ALMOST CRIMES is the story of two young men and the decisions they are driven to make when they try to rob a South Texas cash loans office targeted towards Latino immigrants. Sam, an outsider, has nothing to lose but the haunting desire to escape his small town solitude. Jack is the town's prodigal son and Sam's closest friend, so when Sam asks him for his help with the heist, he can't refuse. Jack has other reasons for wanting to escape but he has a lot more to lose than Sam does. Ultimately both will have to face their feelings for each other as they realize that sometimes desire stands in the way of loyalty, and that there are still many miles left between the town and the city. Because, as they know, we can only play the cards we are dealt and, when push comes to shove, we take our love wherever we can find it.

  La cuesta: Worlding a Sidewalk

Alvaro Torres, Daniel Perera

Costa Rica/Guatemala/USA, Experimental Documentary, 201315 min, HD, Color/Black & WhiteSpanish, English with English subtitles

Director Alvaro Torres in attendance

The places we notice in passing are sites where social hierarchies manifest themselves and interact. In the realm of the visible, only some people are able to remain unseen, to choose whom to see and when. Aesthetics are not how the world is presented to us but rather how it is pre-established for us--what Jacques Ranciere calls “the distribution of the sensible.” What would emerge if we explored an ordinary stretch of sidewalk in the East Side of Austin, Texas, for a period of several months? How and by whom would we be challenged aesthetically and politically? LA CUESTA evokes a place on the side of the road and the lives that sustain it. This interactive documentary is a sensuous ethnography, a confrontation, and a poem.

  Mundos Diferentes, Episodes 1-8

Produced by high school students at the Austin School of Film

Student filmmakers will be present for a Q&A session after the screening

"Hey baby, qué pasó?" A totally different take on the bi-cultural teenage world of sex, drugs, and Tejano rock 'n' roll, that's what's up. Produced entirely by high school students at the Austin School of Film, MUNDOS DIFERENTES is a telenovela that reflects the true-to-life highs and lows of life, love, and loss as seen through the eyes of a quartet of young Latinos in a modern American high school in Austin, Texas. Maria, Alejandra, Christina, and Alex face daily challenges not only of teen life but also specific cross-cultural conflicts: a forgotten sister left behind, a young fugitive fleeing the grim specter of cartel violence, forbidden loves, and buried pasts that are not, perhaps, as deeply interred as they would like.

Presented in cooperation with the Austin School of Film.

Vanilla is a New World spice originating from the state of Veracruz, Mexico. Two different groups of people are involved in its production: the indigenous people who have been growing it on small farms for centuries, and descendants of Italian immigrants who have been processing and selling the bean since the mid-1800s. Vanilla: The Sacred Orchid examines the relationship these two cultures have with the plant during its yearly cycle, from the hand-pollination of the flowers, to the harvesting and subsequent drying of the bean.

In the segments, Latinos from all walks of life tell their personal stories directly to the camera. Since Habla was first shot in New York in 2003, more than 200 stories have gone to air representing Latinos from across the country, both as interstitial stand-alones and as combined into eight Habla specials, including Celebrity Habla I and II. Latino Media Works and HBO are proud to have gone back in the fall of 2010 to Habla's original roots, documenting "real people" in Texas.
