A film by Irene Gutierrez, Javier Labrador

This film was screened as a part of the 2015 Cine Las Americas International Film Festival (CLAIFF18)

Cuba/Spain, Observational Documentary, 2014
71 min, HDV, Color
Spanish with English subtitles

The formerly luxurious Hotel Nueva Isla of Old Havana is now in ruins, but it is home for people living on the fringes of society: Jorge, a retired public servant, and two neighbors, Waldo and La Flaca. With almost no contact with the outside world, Jorge resembles a Don Quixote, gone astray and definitely forgotten. Day by day, his health and body weaken like the walls of Hotel Nueva Isla. Abandoned by his offspring and by the women he was with, his only motivation is to follow a secret revelation he’s had for years. He is convinced that in some place of the ruinous hotel the former owners hid valuable objects before fleeing with the triumph of the Cuban Revolution. But life inside the ruins has become dangerous and while its other tenants look for a safer place, Jorge decides to stay with the building.

LA VIOLENCIA documents the lives of indigenous Mayan women of Guatemala. Guatemala is explored from its violent history to its current fragile state through the personal stories of indigenous women and activists, and is narrated by acclaimed actor Aidan Gillen. Guatemala’s armed conflict tore the country apart for 36 years, claiming the lives of over 200,000 women, men and children. In 2013 Guatemala became the first country in history to put its former head of state on trial for genocide in a domestic court. The accused is General Rios Montt, who ruled the country during the most brutal period of the armed conflict, known as La Violencia. The trial has been marred by outside pressure from the powerful elite and has pushed the justice system to its limits.

Poder e impotencia, Un drama en 3 actos
Power and Impotence, A Drama in 3 Acts

A film by Anna Recalde Miranda

This film was screened as a part of the 2015 Cine Las Americas International Film Festival (CLAIFF18)

Paraguay/France/Italy, Social/Political Documentary, 2014
103 min, HD, Color
Spanish with English subtitles

Fernando Lugo, former Catholic Bishop and proponent of Liberation Theology, won the 2008 presidential elections in Paraguay. After 61 years of hegemony by the Colorado Party, created by dictator Alfredo Stroessner who ruled Paraguay for 35 years, this unexpected victory came as a political miracle. The people’s dream for change finally came true. In a political thriller set in stranger-than-fiction Paraguay, we follow Lugo and his team’s hopes and disappointments, until their tragic fall from power (a coup d’etat in 2012). A unique period in history is documented in an intimate, universal film, providing an insight into the sense and the limits of politics, as well as the paradoxes of democratic systems nowadays – a Shakespearian, contemporary drama about power.
